Butler County was established on December 13, 1819 by an act passed by the Legislature while in session at Huntsville, forming from Conecuh and Monroe Counties. Butler was named in honor of Captain William Butler, born in Virginia, fought in the Creek War and was killed in May 1818. The County Seat is Greenville. Butler County is bordered by the counties of: Lowndes to the North, Crenshaw to the East, Covington to the South, Conecuh to the South West, Monroe to the West and Wilcox to the North West.
