Prairie View Cemetery,
Big Creek Township, Neosho County, Kansas

Prairie View Cemetery is on private land, some of the headstone are badly broken and not legible. Some headstones are badly weathered, and some that were there when an earlier accounting of graves was taken, are no longer there. For some buried there, this submitter was able to research and obtain information, but for some, there remain many questions.

Prairie View Cemetery is located in Big Creek Township which is in upper middle part of Neosho County, Kansas. It is in rural Neosho County, 6 miles east of Chanute on K-39 highway on the north side of the highway.

This cemetery was started about 1875 on the Albert Goltry Farm. Although I have read there was an earlier recorded burial in 1877, one of the first recorded persons buried there was in January 1879 with the burial of James Scott Gilmore. His wife and two daughters and grandchildren are also buried there with surnames of Gilmore, Dennis and Howard. Other names I researched for this cemetery were Briley, and Wimsett.

I was told this cemetery is no longer in use. It is located on private property. Many of the headstones are badly broken, heavily weathered and illegible, or missing. Some which were there and recorded in earlier times, are now missing or broken and no longer legible. This submitter hopes she has helped preserve the memory of these people who certainly went through some sad and difficult times.
