Carrie Dixon Barley
Carrie Dixon Barley slipped quietly into her eternal rest on January 30, 2009 in the comfort of her home. She entered this earth on March 22, 1923 and was 85 years old at the time of her death.
She was the soul remaining child out of 18 born to the late Johnny Buck and Julia Ward Dixon of Java, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Charlie Barley and daughters Erdine Barley Walker and Clara Kirkland Akinleye.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory: daughter Delores Logan (Winfred Logan) of Java, Va., son Charles Barley of the home, granddaughters Crystal Walker of Norfolk, Va., Camille Logan of Java, Va. and grandsons Stephenson Akinleye of Costa Mesa, Calif. and Gabriel Logan of Java, Va.
As the matriarch of her family, she was a dedicated mother and foster mother - fostering over 75 children in her home. Her adult life was spent working as a nurse at Halifax Community Hospital and as a farmer alongside her husband. She dedicated her life to the Lord at an early age and joined Elkhorn Baptist Church. She later joined County Line Baptist Church where she was a member for over five decades and served as a missionary and deaconess.
Wake services shall be held at Dunn & Sons Funeral Home with public viewing from 1 to 8 p.m. on February 6, 2009. Homegoing services shall be held at County Line Baptist Church on February 7, 2009 at 11 a.m. Repass shall follow the burial at the church.
The family will take visitations at the home throughout the week. Condolences may be directed to the home at 3220 Leda Road, Nathalie, Virginia 24577.
Arrangements are by Dunn & Sons Funeral Services, 540 N. Main St., Halifax.
